Secretary General Welcome Letter

Dear Esteemed Guests,

On behalf of the ISUMUN Board of Directors, it is my pleasure to warmly welcome you to the third annual edition of ISUMUN!

Just over two years ago, the International School of Utrecht participated in its very first MUN, marking the official launch of our Model United Nations program. It all began with a small group of dedicated students whose passion and initiative laid the foundation for everything ISUMUN has become today.

Our inaugural conference was a small but meaningful internal event, hosting around 70 delegates. The following year, we proudly opened our doors to other schools, welcoming around 140 participants and beginning our journey as a truly interschool conference. This year, we are excited to grow even further, inviting more schools, welcoming new delegates, and offering a platform for thoughtful debate on what we strongly believe are some of the most pressing global challenges of our time.

Fast forward to now, and ISUMUN has evolved into a vibrant, inclusive, and increasingly fruitful debate experience. With very positive reception from last year’s conference, more returning schools, new ones eager to join, and a broader range of countries represented, it’s truly inspiring to see how far this conference has come in just three years, and where it will go in the future.

This year’s theme is: “Digital Diplomacy: Addressing Cybersecurity, Human Rights and Global Governance in the Digital Era”. It is a theme that couldn’t be more timely or more necessary. We’re living in a world where diplomacy no longer only takes place in meeting rooms as it now unfolds through online platforms and encrypted communications. As technology reshapes our societies, it also challenges the way we address sovereignty, security, freedom, privacy and justice.

Who holds power in the digital space? How do we safeguard individual rights in an age of mass data collection and surveillance? What role should international institutions play in governing the internet? These are the kinds of complex, urgent questions we want you to engage with not just as delegates, but as young thinkers and change makers because at the heart of this theme lies a deeply human responsibility: to uphold dignity, amplify voices, protect privacy, and ensure justice in a world where technology is evolving faster than our ability to govern it.

This edition of ISUMUN isn’t just another conference; it truly is the beginning of something bigger. Every speech, resolution, and alliance formed this weekend contributes to a forum that’s becoming more influential each year. You’re not just participating in debates, you’re helping shape what this conference stands for and what it can become. So speak with intention, listen with curiosity, and don’t underestimate the value of your voice in this space.

ISUMUN is growing, and now you are joining us for the journey. Thank you for choosing to be a part of this conference.

We are eager to see you all at ISUMUN 2026!

Yours truly,

Saanvi Sharath Bharadwaj- Secretary-General
